Good Skeet Gun

Posted on Friday Dec 2 15:07:00 UTC 2011

What makes a good Skeet gun?

I think the best place to start is deciding on your budget, and the level of your ability. Are you a club shooter, or do you have aspirations to progress hire up the ladder within the discipline. Once you have made these decisions, you can then follow the points I have laid out below to help answer your question, what makes a good skeet gun.

Now is the time to start asking yourself a few key questions:-

  1. Is the gun going to be purely for Skeet? Or are you going to use it for other disciplines, or even game shooting
  2. How regularly will you use the gun, if the answer is a lot, you will need to make sure the gun is fitted properly for your build, and that you can cope with the amount of recoil as it will be very warring, and lastly it will need to be durable, to stand up to regular use in all weathers.
  3. Am I looking for a light or heavy gun? a light gun will mean a shorter barrel, 26” to 28”, where as a longer barrels measuring 30” to 32” on a heavy gun will mean the gravity point will be off centre, but they do send the shot further and are currently the trend. You will also need to decide on chokes, either fixed or multi, again discipline dependent.
  4. My stock, what am I looking for in its looks, and functionality. The current trends lean towards a parallel comb, both available with and without an adjustable comb. But the main key to a great stock is, FIT FIT FIT.

You may feel I have only answered your question with a lot more questions, but as we are all
individuals’ gun choice is very personal, both in fit and use.

That said if you are looking for a good bench mark to gage your final choices against, you could do no worse than the Krieghoff K80, used by and recommended by some of the world’s top shooters.

I hope this gives you a better place to start your search for your ideal gun, I will repeat one message from this which is the most critical part of buying any gun, make sure it fits you. Gun fit Gun fit.
